6.2 Magnitude Earthquake Shakes Costa Rica

A very strong earthquake shook Costa Rica today causing important structural damage in buildings, roads, houses and leaving several people injured or stranded. At least two deaths have been reported.

The US Geological Survey said the earthquake was centered 35 kilometers northwest of the capital of San Jose in the early afternoon, near the Poas Volcano National Park, one of the biggest attractions for tourists in the country.

According to some, the earthquake is one of the strongest to be felt in Costa Rica in the last years, shaking its metropolitan area where at least 2.5 million people live (more than half of the country’s population).
