Costa Rica is a safe destination for 99% of its tourists, but it’s always a good idea to exercise caution whenever one travels. This is a growing list of traveler recommendations, if you would like us to add something to this list, please create a new thread sharing your own recommendations and we will do our best to include them here.
1. Leave your passport in a safe place like your hotel lock box. Make a photocopy of the identity and visa page to carry with you. Protect your passport and don't risk the hassle!
2. When visiting San José, travelers should take the same common sense precautions that they would in any other large city. While the streets are relatively safe during the day, it is recommended that travelers, especially women, do not walk alone after dark.
3. Caution should be taken at bus terminals, especially when headed to the beaches or more remote areas of the country. Travelers are advised never to leave bags unattended.
